MPs to spend £6m more from the taxpayer on plush new offices in their constituencies

Millions of pounds of taxpayers' money will be spent improving the constituency offices of MPs as part of a shake-up of their expenses. A Commons committee chaired by Speaker Michael Martin is to hand out around £6million for renovation projects after complaints that MPs cannot afford to pay for decent offices out of their current expenses. But far from ensuring MPs search for the best deal possible, the committee will also insist offices are based in large 'houses of character', with 'best quality fittings throughout'. The initial ideas of having offices for these obviously hard up, hard working people in Nissan huts in Green park was discounted , regardless of it's proximity to the House of Commons.

The average bonus paid to senior officials in most departments was more than £7,000. Staff at the Treasury racked up £21.7million, of which more than £19million went to those at HM Revenue and Customs, the agency which lost discs containing the personal data of more than 25million people late last year. Last month it emerged that Home Office staff spent almost £11million on taxis, hotels and flights last year. The bill - picked up by the taxpayer - has rocketed by almost 50 per cent in three years..
